Reading this article alone, I felt that I was being mentally overloaded with information. Although it was very informational, the article seemed to be doing exactly what all of the modern day sites do....overload people with information.
I do agree that nowadays, many social networks and websites allow people to get ahold of TOO much information. I have seen people do some serious detective work just by researching someone on Facebook alone. Although technology is a beautiful thing, I have always felt that there is a double standard. Technology can assist with research and information, but it can also expose you to information that you didn't want to potentially know about your neighbor next door.
In the article it states that "the booming science of decision making has shown that more information can lead to objectively poorer choices, and to choices that people come to regret". I couldn't agree more with this statement. Sometimes we let technology get the best of us to where we get to a point that we don't think that we can make a decision without googling it first. Sometimes I feel that I should just lock my smartphone, laptop, and ipod away for a day and see just how it would be to function without it.
Amanda,
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way when reading the article. It presented a lot of good information, however there was a lot of it. I liked how you said that technology is a double standard. I agree, because I feel like rely too much on technology where we can become frantic or stressed out if we don't go on Facebook for a day. Isn't that crazy? It's amazing how much technology really takes over our lives; and like you said, sometimes I just want to lock all of my stuff up and see how it would be to live without technology for awhile.
Amanda~
ReplyDeleteBeginning this article I felt the same way! I thought this reading is being a bit hypocritical in presentation. Word after word was overloading my brain and I thought to myself what is there point? I thought it was interesting also that technology can take up such a large part of our lives and we don't even realize it. Having these blogs is the perfect example. Some people live to blog, and more power to them. But doesn't that just add one more opinion to the mix? You make really good points that I think we could all think about. Nice thinking!

Amanda,
ReplyDeleteThat is exactly how I felt after reading this article! There was just so much information that I still am feeling a bit overwhelmed. I also loved what you said about social networking and other websites that allow people to get a hold of too much information. I think that technology can be used for good but can also be used for bad (if not used in the correct way). I think that people rely on technology too much for information-like what you said about having to google everything. I feel like I should put away my phone, laptop, ipad etc away all of the time...I think it might relieve stress for everyone!
I agree with your opinions about technology. It can be a very useful tool but also dangerous to our well being and, of course, decision making skills. I also am one of those people who cannot live without technology so I might just try your test and see if I can live without my pieces of technology for a day. It would be quite interesting because I am not sure what I would do. I would not be able to google, do homework, text or surf through Facebook. Maybe I would be able to clearly think through some decisions that need to be made!
ReplyDeleteSo every year my family goes on a camping trip. My mom created a 'no cellphone' policy, and really what she did was create a no technology policy. At first, I hated the mere idea of it. How was going to survive without my technology?! That sounds dramatic, but seriously, I felt like it was the end of the world. Now, I look forward to that week that is technology free. I actually want time in my life where I am not constantly connected to both friends and information--I find it almost freeing. I cannot unhook myself from technology during my everyday life, but when my mom makes a rule, I can follow it. Technology has gotten to a point with me where I need it. I need it for directions to a new place, for stay connected with friends and family, and for school. My life has become centered around technology.
ReplyDeleteAmanda, I really liked your point about the internet giving us access to TOO much information. I think it's so interesting to think about the fact that you could live your whole life not knowing something, and it would never affect you negatively or positively. But you can read something on the internet and instantly it has the ability to change how you think, how you live, or how you feel. It's a little sad how much power the internet has over people.
